Miss Eleanor Simpson Wells was a 32-year old clerk for the newly-established Nova Scotia Bible Society in Halifax when she received this letter, possibly from her sister in Lower Horton, Nova Scotia. (Wolfville would have been the first stop for a letter mailed from Lower Horton.) Eleanor was born in 1832, the daughter of James Simpson Wells (Sep 23, 1798-May 10, 1846) and Ann Eliza Wells (Dec 25, 1792-Mar 26, 1867), who were married 22 April 1812 in Halifax. They are buried in St. Stephen's Anglican Church Cemetery in Chester, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. James was the son of Judah Wells Jr and Eleanor Simpson. Judah was born in Cornwallis in 1763. His father, Judah Sr., was a New England planter from New London, Connecticut.
Hutchinson’s Nova Scotia Directory, 1864-1865, lists Wells, Miss E.S., tract depository, 113 Barrington, b(or)ds 55 Granville.
On 13 July 1868 at the Presbyterian Church in Halifax, Eleanor S. Wells, 35, spinster, of Halifax, daughter of James (paymaster RN) and Anna E Wells married Augustus Brown, 63, widowed farmer, son of Charles (also a farmer) and Francis Brown of Lower Horton, Kings County. Witnessed by Frederick and S.A. Brown. Rev. W. Masewell, officiating.
Eleanor's sister, Lydia Norris Wells (1833-1903) had married Augustus Brown's brother, Frederick Brown (1827-1896) of Horton a decade earlier in 1858.
Augustus Brown was born 9 Aug 1803. He and Frederick were sons of Charles Henry Brown (1773-1848) and Francis Lothrop (1781-1865) of Horton. Charles's parents, Nathaniel Brown Jr (1745- ) and Elizabeth Harding (1749-1814) were New England Planters from Massachusetts.
Augustus Brown married first Nancy Whidden around 1850.
In the 1851 census, Augustus Brown is head of a household of 2: 1 male and 1 female.
In the 1861 census for Kings County, Augustus Brown is head of a household of 6: 3 males and 3 females.
Agustus Brown's first wife, Nancy Whidden Brown, died on June 20, 1867 (aged 51).
In the 1871 census for Lower Horton we find Augustus Brown, 67, presbyterian farmer, and his wife Eleanor S., 45
The 1881 census for Lower Horton has Augustus Brown, 77, his wife, Eleanor S, 50, and Eleanor's unmarried sister, Alice H. Wells, 48. Alice died in June 1903 and is buried in St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
Farmer Augustus Brown of Horton was also active in his families mercantile business. He owned the Brigantine "Cordelia", built in 1853 and the Barque "Norval" built 1855, both registered in Windsor, Nova Scotia
Augustus Brown died 6 Dec 1885 (aged 82). He is buried in the Grand Pre Covenanters Cemetery. Eleanor lived until 24 Jul 1913 and died in Halifax. She is buried with her husband in Grand Pre.
The British America Book and Tract Society established a Nova Scotia Branch in July 1863 with offices at 113 Barrington Street, across from St. Paul's Church, Halifax.
