John Edward Mullouney was a 30-year old dentist boarding at 9 Chester Park in Boston when he received this letter from home. He was born 11 Aug 1836 in Newport Station, Hants County, N.S. the son of Daniel Mullowney (1800-1863) and Margaret Lanigan Mullowney (1804 Ireland-1900). Both parents are buried in Saint Joseph's Cemetery, Kentville with three of their children Charles M Mullowney (1842–1926), Mary Ann Mullowney (1845–1858), and Agnes J. Mullowney (1849–1925).

The 1861 census for Kentville, Kings County had Daniel Mullouney head of a household of 11: 7 males and 4 females. He and Margaret were the proprietors of the Victoria House Hotel in Kentville.

The 1865 Boston Directory lists John E. Mullowney, dentist, 9 Chester Park.

Hutchinson's Nova Scotia Directory, for 1866/67 has Mullowney, Mrs. Daniel, innkeeper (husband Daniel had died in 1863) and Mullowney, John E., dentist.

In the 1871 census, Jennie Mullowney, 30, married, born in the United States, and Laura Mullowney, 2, born Nova Scotia, are boarders with Charles and Grace Loveless, innkeepers in Canning, Kings County. John Mullowney does not appear in the 1871 census. However, McAlpine’s Maritime Province Directory, 1870-1871, for Canning, Kings County, has Mullowney, John E., dentist. It seems John was out of the province at the time of the census.

It is interesting to chart John Mullowney's progress from Roman Catholic to agnostic to Roman Catholic to Anglican and to see his gravestone marked with a prominent cross.
